In onze rubriek MOOI MENS gezien staat deze maand een internationale sportieveling in het zonnetje: Kelly Romer. Kelly komt oorspronkelijk uit Kaapstad (Zuid-Afrika) en verhuisde 3,5 jaar geleden naar Breda. Wat begon als een nieuwe start op onbekende bodem, groeide uit tot een lokaal hardloopinitiatief dat wekelijks tientallen mensen in beweging brengt: Parkrun Waterakkers. —-> This article is written in English below!

Hardlopen verbindt!
Kelly verhuisde 3,5 jaar geleden vanuit Kaapstad naar Breda samen met haar man voor werk. Een nieuwe omgeving op het Europese continent, bood haar de kans om langzaam een nieuw leven op te bouwen. Eén van haar passies, hardlopen, liet ze niet achter. Via via kwam ze in contact met een van de organisatoren van Parkrun, een wereldwijd fenomeen waar deelnemers gratis samenkomen om 5 km te wandelen, joggen, hardlopen, helpen of gewoon te kijken. Parkrun kende ze al vanuit haar land Kaapstad en daar deed Kelly regelmatig mee als deelnemer. In Breda bestond dit nog niet en Kelly zag dit als dé kans om haar sociale kring te vergroten en Breda beter te leren kennen door haar liefde voor hardlopen te delen.
Internationaal in de Waterakker
Na een uitgebreide zoektocht vonden ze het perfecte 5 kilometer rondje in Breda, langs Waterakker, waar nu al twee jaar lang (de enige) Parkrun in Breda plaatsvindt. Wat begon met een klein groepje van vier personen is uitgegroeid tot een wekelijks evenement met tussen de 20 en 50 deelnemers. Kelly vertelt: “Parkrun trekt niet alleen lokale sportievelingen, maar ook internationale toeristen die speciaal naar Breda komen voor de unieke ervaring. Sommigen nemen zelfs de uitdaging aan om Parkruns over de hele wereld te voltooien, van A tot Z, waarbij de zeldzame ‘W’ van Waterakker in Breda een speciale trekpleister blijkt te zijn”.
Speciale edities
Enkele van Kelly’s meest speciale momenten zijn onder meer de speciale carnavalseditie, waar iedereen verkleed komt, en de Paaseditie waar kinderen meehelpen met het zoeken naar eieren. Van Kaapstad tot Breda: vrijwilligerswerk kent geen grenzen voor Kelly. De Parkrun-community zorgt ervoor dat iedereen wereldwijd kan meedoen!
Zelfs vanuit Kaapstad blijft Kelly verbonden
Kelly, die ooit als deelnemer begon bij de Parkrun in haar geboortestad Kaapstad, staat nu aan de andere kant als vrijwilliger en organisator. Voor haar is het een manier om iets terug te doen voor de gemeenschap die haar zoveel heeft gebracht. Hoewel Kelly binnenkort met haar man en kind terugkeert naar Kaapstad, blijft ze verbonden met de Parkrun in Breda als vrijwilliger, waar ze met liefde achter de schermen blijft werken voor deze fijne groep. Kelly vertelt: “Breda begon twee jaar geleden als 15e Parkrun in Nederland en twee jaar later zijn dus er 25. Over de hele wereld zijn er ruim 3600 parkruns met meer dan 200.000 deelnemers over de hele wereld. Hoe bijzonder is dat!”

In our feature “MOOI MENS gezien” (which means something like: let us introduce you to a beautiful soul) we’re shining a spotlight on an international athletic inspiration: Kelly Romer. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, she moved to Breda 3.5 years ago. What started as a fresh beginning on unfamiliar ground grew into a local running initiative that now gets dozens of people moving every week: Parkrun Waterakkers.

Running unites!
Kelly moved from Cape Town to Breda 3.5 years ago with her husband for work. A new environment on the European continent offered her the chance to slowly build a new life. One of her passions, running, she did not leave behind. Through connections, she got in touch with one of the organizers of Parkrun, a global phenomenon where participants come together for free to walk, jog, run, help, or simply watch a 5 km route. She was already familiar with Parkrun from her hometown of Cape Town, where Kelly regularly participated. In Breda, this didn’t exist yet, and Kelly saw this as the perfect opportunity to expand her social circle and get to know Breda better by sharing her love for running.
De Wandelakker goes international
After an extensive search, they found the perfect 5 km route in Breda, along Waterakker, where the only Parkrun in Breda has been taking place for two years now. What started with a small group of four people has grown into a weekly event with between 20 and 50 participants. Kelly says, “Parkrun attracts not only local sports enthusiasts but also international tourists who come to Breda specifically for the unique experience. Some even take on the challenge of completing Parkruns around the world, from A to Z, with the rare ‘W’ of Waterakker in Breda proving to be a special draw.”
Special editions
Some of Kelly’s most memorable moments include the special carnival edition, where everyone dresses up, and the Easter edition where children help search for eggs. From Cape Town to Breda, volunteering knows no bounds for Kelly, and the Parkrun community ensures that everyone is welcomed worldwide.
Even from Capetown Kelly stays connected
Kelly, who once started as a participant at the Parkrun in her hometown of Cape Town, now stands on the other side as a volunteer and organizer. For her, it’s a way to give back to the community that has given her so much. Although Kelly will soon return to Cape Town with her husband and child, she remains connected to the Parkrun in Breda as a volunteer, lovingly working behind the scenes for this wonderful group. Kelly says, “Breda started as the 15th Parkrun in the Netherlands two years ago, and now there are over 25. Worldwide, there are over 3600 parkruns with more than 200,000 participants. How amazing is that!”
